The Consul General of Israel for Quebec and the Maritimes is under attack. One would think that the attacks would stem from the pro-Palestinian camp or perhaps some anti-Semitic group hating him for being Israeli and Orthodox. But no, these groups have not bothered Joel Lion, he is under attack, internationally, from a more nefarious group, pro-Israel French speaking Montreal Jews.
It all started when the Montreal based consul decided to be fiscally responsible and cut back on amount of invitations the consulate sent out for their annual private Yom Haatzmaut cocktail party. Historically, the consul invites pro-Israel community leaders to join him at a private celebratory party honoring Israel’s birthday. The invitation list used to be vast, including journalists and peripheral community leaders. In recent years, consecutive consuls have pared their list to save money.
This year, the Consul decided to reduce his list again and as part of his cuts he removed the invites to all reporters from Radio Shalom Montreal. The President of the station, Robert Levy, was the only person at the station invited.
This raised the dander of both Robert Levy, who fired off a letter informing the Consul that he will be boycotting the event out of protest, and the French journalists who have embarked on a campaign to embarrass the Consul internationally.
Radio Shalom commentator Dora Marrache wrote a scathing missive published on an international French news wire service condemning the Consul and his “fellow religionists” over remarks he made during a speech and accusing him of not being pro-Israel. In all fairness, she did admit in her article that her sour grapes came from not being invited to the private party. She was soon followed by condemnations from another Radio Shalom French Commentator Guy Hadad, who accused the Consul of being pro-Hareidi (the horrors!).
The divisive anti-religious attitude expressed by these so called journalists is not only embarrassing to everyone involved with Radio Shalom, but makes one wonder how self serving their pro-Israel activities are.
Instead of accepting the fact that the Consul General of Israel has the right to invite whomever he wants to his private parties, they decided to go on the attack and try to discredit him as a consul and a person. Just because they read pro-Israel commentaries on the radio doesn’t entitle them to any special consideration from anyone.
Radio Shalom, who professes to be a pro-Israel radio station, has sent the Consul two letters of apology for the actions of their commentators. More must be done, however, to ensure that puffy chested slighted commentators do not continue to embarrass both the station and The State of Israel.
These commentators must be reprimanded and suspended from the station for their actions. The station must send a clear message that on it’s airwaves or not, this despicable self serving, damaging behavior by members of their team is not acceptable.
