A Jewish woman in her 60s was killed by a hit and run driver in front of Chez Benny a little after 10:30 Tuesday night.

Elyane Benizri of Dollard-des-Ormeaux was in Montreal with some friends to visit someone sitting Shiva. After the Shiva they all went out for coffee at Chez Benny. Benizri started her car remotely and on her approach to the car she was struck by a car heading East, pharm and thrown several feet. She had been standing on the side of the road.

The driver stepped out of the vehicle but then quickly got back behind the wheel and drove away.

Witnesses called Hatzoloh who were first to arrive on the scene. They found Benizri in traumatic cardiac arrest. Her shoes and pocketbook were lying 50 feet from where she had been struck.

Benizri was transported and pronounced dead at St Mary’s Hospital.

Police have not yet identified the driver, and have asked all businesses in the area to provide their surveillance footage. They do not have a description of the vehicle or its driver. Anyone with any information about the hit and run is asked to call the police at 514-393-1133.
